From convent to campus: a historic heart transformed into a hub for students, culture and community life.

In the historic heart of Piacenza, right beside the stunning Church of Sant’Agostino, stands the former Caserma Cantore — once the ancient Convent of Sant’Agostino. More than just walls and arches, this place carries centuries of stories, architectural elegance and a heritage so significant it’s protected by law.

Thanks to the support of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, the vision isn’t just to restore what time has worn down, but to spark new life into it: turning the complex into a contemporary hub for culture, learning and community, with a special focus on students and young people.

This is urban regeneration with a human heartbeat. Think vibrant student housing tailored to the real needs of Piacenza’s universities — Cattolica, Politecnico and Conservatorio — alongside flexible spaces for cultural projects, workshops and public events. Caritas, already active here, will gain expanded spaces to better support those who need it most.

The project goes beyond interiors: the three historic courtyards and the open spaces behind the church will be carefully restored, keeping their authentic soul intact. The ex-Cavallerizza Courtyard, for example, will transform into a lively new passageway connecting to the future State Archives, adding fresh energy to the city’s daily life.

A place that invites students, creatives, musicians, activists and locals to meet, collaborate and share ideas. Proof that regeneration isn’t about freezing history in time, but about opening it up to new stories, new voices and new possibilities.
